The Exploration of a tree failure

During the weekend of September 14th, 2002,
the Atlanta area was hit by the remnants of what was Tropical Storm Hanna.
These pictures depict a classic example of tree failure due to decay in a tree
trunk.

This failure occurred at a height of 47 feet. This Red Oak was 27 inches in diameter where the
failure occurred. The cavity was 17 inches across, creating a hollow trunk with 5 inch thick walls.

The picture on the left is the second section of the failed tree top. This limb is 18
inches in diameter just above the failure point.
The picture on the right shows the column of decay (measuring 87 inches in length) in the
trunk.
