It's not just about Hostas....

Here's a list of over 400 different plants growing in our garden.

As avid gardeners, we tend to want to grow lots of different plant material and even try to stretch the Zones a bit by trying plants "they" say won't survive here, so some of the plants you see here are experimental. We are in USDA Zone 7 (somewhere between 7a & 7b), but have some zone 8 plants in our garden, and many zone 2 & 3 plants, as well. We pretty much will try anything once or twice, although we do tend to stay away from the tropicals, unless we use them as annuals. I think if we indulged in every tropical plant that catches our eye, we'd have to build massive greenhouses to over-winter them, and start moving them in midsummer. Truly some tropical plants are stunning, breathtaking even, but there are so many other things to try, that we tend to shy away from anything from zones 9-11. And although we've lost some zone 8 plants, we continue to try, try, try.

They say Conifers don't do well in the South, and you'd think that would discourage us from trying, but being Tree People, we're willing to give any tree (or shrub for that matter) a shot in our garden, especially those we deem "stunning".

Like all collectors, our garden has many 'drifts of one'. Overall our style is relaxed and informal. Our home was built in 1890 and is a great backdrop to the garden. Only a true gardener would understand that statement, as we tend to place more value on our gardens then we do on our homes. <wink> We have a hosta display garden with over 1000 kinds of hostas nestled under old oaks, Hickories, Sassafras, Sourwoods, dogwoods and other native trees. From there we started adding a conifer here, a flowering tree there, a shrub here and before we knew it, the garden had grown from a hosta patch, to over three acres of interesting trees and shrubs.  The one thing we have is space to grow, as our garden, Faewood, is nestled on 21 acres.

This will be a living, breathing account for the plants in our garden. Some may die (knock on wood that they don't), some will struggle, but hopefully most will flourish. (pixie dust is so helpful!)  This site will give you some of our experience as to what plants do well, and maybe even produce a list of conifers that do well in the South... We are located about 45 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta, Georgia.

As the season progresses, we will be posting some interesting pictures that will document the growth of these plants and give you some idea of how well they are doing in our garden. Please come back often as this is a work in progress.

Not listed here are the over 1000 different kinds of Hostas we grow. Please visit our garden website at www.PixieForest.com
