Using Modified Tree Bags
to create a planting bed
Tree bags were developed by growers to contain tree roots. Seedlings are planted in the bags and the bags keep
the roots in the bag resulting in a nice compact root ball. The bags come in many sizes and can be put in between major roots.
Using modified tree bags allows you to create a small bed for a single plant. I have
used 3 and 5 gallon modified Agroliners for Hosta. I can create a nice hosta cover working around the major tree roots of large
Maples I have. The bags can be placed in any area that does not have major roots. If a opening is found in the Structural Zone or
the Critical Zone a modified tree bag can be placed without touching major roots.

Modified tree bags can be place in any area without major roots. Since the bags are made of a non-woven fabric they
can be molded between and next to major roots. All you need is enough room to dig a 3 or 5 gallon hole. |
Two important points:
1) Tree roots can travel along the surface so leave at least one inch of material above the soil surface.
2) Normal tree bags may not be heavy enough to keep roots out. The bags must be of a barrier quality material. I
have had good results using extra heavy double coated Agroliners. These bags contain a copper compound that is only released when
the tip of a tree root comes in contact with it. I turn the Agroliners inside out so the treated side is on the outside.
3) If you think you soil is poorly draining you may want to fill a hole with water. If the water does not drain
in one hour then the this site will likely have a water problem.
